- Domain Registration - Two options:
- A
paid domain registration,
where you can choose a name of your choice, e.g. www.yourname.com
- A
free domain registration, where you choose a
name like www.permaculture.110mb.com.
Another example of a free domain name is the
site that Island Media designed and hosts for Astral Jester films, www.astraljester.webs.com.
- Website Construction - Includes a basic single page website with between five to seven sub-headings hyperlinked within the page: i.e.

- Website Hosting & Email
– Three options:
- Paid
Web Hosting – The starter package is a small package with only 30mb of
disk space, which is plenty for the site itself but not for tons of
large graphics. The Island Media Permaculture site, www.permacultureplanet.com
is hosted with this package and it has lots of pages, the picture
gallery is hosted externally on Flikr, which is a free service and
saves on disk usage. The next size up is for 100mb of disk space,
unnecessary, unless you want to post lots of pictures.
- Free
Web Hosting – If you have your own domain name, there are a number of
free web hosting options, which are ad supported, www.gardenpermaculture.com
is an Island Media site that is hosted for free and has a couple of
banner ads at the top of the page. Also on a free server is www.islandmedia.com
itself, you’ll notice that when you click somewhere on the page, you’ll
see a popup advertisement.
- Neither
the paid or free web hosting options above include an email account,
i.e. you@yourname.com.
But you can use the free mail forwarder that comes with the paid
hosting, that way any mail that goes to someone@yourname.com
can be forwarded to a Gmail or Yahoo account or other free mail account
of your choice. Alternatively, the paid hosting package is also
available with an additional email account.
- Site Promotion –
(Meta Tags Insertion, Robot Text, Site Map & Search
Engine Submission) – This
is in effect some of the un-seen stuff that enables a web site to show
up in search engine results, such as Google, Yahoo, MSN etc. Without
including these things, even if someone types www.yourname.com
into Google or another search engine, it won’t show up or be listed,
which may make it very difficult to locate the site!
- Site Maintenance, Updates
